Mauro Mascarello’s first Barolo Monprivato in 1970 was a turning point in Barolo history. Though traditionally made with a long maceration on the skins, followed by years in large barrel, 1970 Monprivato was one of the first great, single-vineyard Barolos. In fact, its greatness inspired other traditionalists to take the same path, changing the face of Barolo forever. Over the next 20 years, Mauro slowly acquired most of the remaining parcels of Monprivato, to the point that this grand cru vineyard is today a virtual monopole of the Mascarello family. Now that Mauro is well into his 70s, and the sole surviving traditionalist giant of his generation, retirement is inevitable. Fortunately, his two children, Giuseppe and Elena, have inherited their father’s staunchly-traditional views. There will be no concessions to modern tastes for darker and/or richer wines. For those with patience, aged Monprivatos are some of the region’s most singular wines. Join us when Elena Mascarello makes her first ever visit to California. Elena will walk us through all her wines including older vintages
